Understanding Cage Size Requirements
Most commercially sold small pet cages are far too small. Pet stores commonly stock cages that meet only 20–50% of the minimum space requirements recommended by veterinary and welfare organizations. This guide compares popular cage models against scientifically-backed minimums from the RSPCA, Rabbit Welfare Association, and other authoritative sources.
Why Floor Area Matters More Than Levels
Multi-level cages are marketed as offering "more space," but platforms and tubes do not count toward minimum floor area requirements. Hamsters, guinea pigs, and rabbits need continuous unbroken floor space to run, forage, and exhibit natural behaviors. A cage with multiple small platforms stacked vertically is not equivalent to a single large flat enclosure. The cost/cm² metric in our tables helps you compare the true value of each cage based on usable floor space.
