A balanced diet should include a appropriate mix of pellets, fresh vegetables, occasional fruits, and constant access to hay (for herbivores). Always provide fresh water in a clean bottle or bowl, and clean food dishes daily to prevent bacterial growth.

Obesity is one of the most common health problems in captive small pets. In the wild, these animals spend hours foraging and traveling, but in a cage, their activity is limited. Seeds with shells can splinter and cause internal damage. Raw beans and rhubarb contain compounds that are harmful to rabbits and guinea pigs. Always research a new food before offering it to your pet, and introduce new foods gradually to avoid digestive upset.

Choosing Quality Commercial Food

The quality of commercial pellets varies enormously between brands. Look for foods that list specific whole ingredients (like "timothy hay" rather than "hay product") and avoid those with added sugars, artificial colors, or excessive seed mixtures. For guinea pigs, ensure the food contains added vitamin C. For chinchillas and rabbits, choose timothy-based pellets rather than alfalfa-based, especially for adult animals. Store food in a cool, dry place and use it within 3-6 months of opening to ensure freshness.
